When a condition has sub-cases, indent and re-state the parent scope on each child:

Pattern 4: question per branch

For highly distinct branches, split into separate Question items in FAQPage schema. Each question name carries the condition: "Can I cancel an annual subscription within 30 days?" rather than "Can I cancel?" with branched body content. This is the highest-precision pattern but requires more authoring effort.

Before publishing, verify each conditional answer against this checklist:

  1. Every branch starts with an explicit condition ("If…" or "For …").
  2. No branch uses ambiguous quantifiers ("some", "may", "often") in the answer body.
  3. Mutually exclusive branches share a single exclusivity vocabulary.
  4. A default fallback covers users who match no listed condition.
  5. Numbers, dates, and durations appear inside the matching branch — never in a shared preamble that an engine could attach to the wrong branch.
  6. Exception clauses use "This does not apply if…" or "Except when…", never bare "however".
  7. The user-question test passes: a reader presented only the matching branch reaches the correct answer.

Common mistakes

  • Shared preamble: putting a duration ("covers 24 months") in the introduction and listing branches below. The engine attaches the duration to the wrong branch.
  • Hedged language: "generally", "usually", "in most cases" inside an answer body. Hedges are extractable as facts.
  • Implicit defaults: assuming the reader fills in "otherwise…". AI engines do not infer; they extract.
  • Mixed signal vocabulary: using "only if" and "provided that" interchangeably. Pick one and use it everywhere on the page.
  • Long prose branches: a 200-word paragraph for a single branch dilutes the answer and risks branch leakage when the retrieval window splits the passage.
  • No exclusivity marker on the last branch: readers and engines treat the final paragraph as a soft conclusion. End every conditional list with an explicit closer.
  • Numbers without scope: "30-day window" appearing twice in different branches without scope re-statement causes engines to merge them.

How to validate

  1. Pick one conditional answer on your page. Ask three different AI engines (AI Overviews, Perplexity, ChatGPT Search) the question that would map to one specific branch.
  2. Inspect the cited passage. It should match exactly the branch you intended.
  3. Repeat for the default branch and for an out-of-scope user ("I bought in 2019…"). The engine should return the default, not a wrong branch.
