How to Write AI-Citable Answers
Writing AI-citable answers is the practice of crafting content that AI search engines can easily extract, understand, and present as direct answers to user queries.
Writing AI-citable answers requires placing direct, factual answers in the first 2-3 sentences, using clear entity names, structuring with lists and tables, and avoiding filler or marketing language.
The AI-Citable Writing Framework
Rule 1: Answer First, Always
Citable:
"The average GEO implementation takes 3-6 months for a mid-size website with 500-1000 pages."
Not citable:
"When it comes to GEO implementation timelines, there are many factors to consider, including your team size, existing content quality, and technical infrastructure..."
Rule 2: Name Everything
Replace vague references with specific entities:
| Instead of | Write |
|---|---|
| "The platform" | "ChatGPT" or "Perplexity" |
| "Experts say" | "According to Google's Search Liaison" |
| "Recently" | "In March 2025" |
| "Many companies" | "73% of Fortune 500 companies" |
Rule 3: One Idea Per Sentence
AI extracts individual sentences. Keep each one self-contained:
Good: "GEO focuses on AI search visibility. AEO focuses on answer extraction. Both are subsets of AI search optimization."
Bad: "While GEO and AEO are related concepts that both fall under the broader umbrella of AI search optimization, they differ in focus, with GEO targeting visibility and AEO targeting extraction."
Rule 4: Use Extractable Formats
Definitions: "[Term] is [definition]."
Numbers: "[Metric] is [value] [unit]."
Comparisons: "[A] costs [X] while [B] costs [Y]."
Procedures: Numbered lists (1, 2, 3)
Rule 5: No Filler
Remove these patterns:
- "In today's rapidly evolving landscape..."
- "It's important to note that..."
- "As we all know..."
- "Let's dive deep into..."
- "Without further ado..."
Before and After Examples
Example 1: Definition
Before: "You might be wondering what GEO is all about. Well, it's actually a really exciting new field that's changing how we think about search optimization in the age of AI."
After: "GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring content so AI systems can understand, retrieve, and cite it in generated answers."
Example 2: How-to
Before: "There are several ways you might want to go about creating an llms.txt file for your website."
After: "To create an llms.txt file: 1) Create a plain text file named llms.txt. 2) Add your site name and description. 3) List your key pages with URLs. 4) Place the file in your root directory."
